There have been quite a few good movies this year. The same goes for music. A lot of great stuff has come out this year, and I’m going to recognize it. So here are the best movies and music of 2012.
From great comic book movies like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises to downright hilarious comedies like The Dictator and The Campaign, this year has been great for movies. There has been a wide variety of excellent movies in every genre, and a few of movies that are now in my top ten were released this year. I watch a lot of movies, so I’ve seen many movies that have come out this year.
The best superhero, and indeed, action, movie this year was, hands down, The Dark Knight Rises. The Avengers was awesome, but the Dark Knight Rises was more than a superhero movie. It was a superhero movie combined with a social commentary about economic inequality. And that was what made it so good, and what has made the entire trilogy so good. On top of that, the acting was stellar, the cinematography was brilliant, the soundtrack was amazing, and it had some great action set pieces. The best animated movie of the year, was, again, a Batman movie. The award for this category goes to The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1. And how could it have been bad? The Dark Knight Returns is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read, and with DC’s stellar animation team working on it, it became one of the bets animated movies I have ever seen. On the other side of the spectrum, the bets comedy of the year goes to Sacha Baren Cohen’s The Dictator. Despite it not having much of a plot, it managed to get a political message across, and, at the same time be downright hilarious. The Dictator was easily one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Moving away from the movies themselves, the best actor this year was Robert Downey Jr. for his stellar role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Avengers. His charismatic personality was spot on casting for the billionaire turned superhero, and his performance is easily the best of the year. The best actress this year also starred in a superhero movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman was easily the best performance of the year, as her portrayal of Catwoman was awesome. I don’t think I even have to tell you what the best movie of the year was, or who the best director was. The awards go, respectively, to The Dark Knight Rises and it’s amazing director, Christopher Nolan.
This year was so awesome for music it got it’s own blog post. If I were you, I’d check that out, it’s pretty awesome. And it gives all the details on what came out this year and exactly how good it was. And the releases this year were, for the most part, undoubtedly excellent.
Before I get into album awards, I have to say that the best live show goes to System of a Down. I’ve seen quite a few bands live, and I’ve seen others on YouTube, but System of a Down by far as the best live show. Serj Tankian’s charisma is awesome, and with an almost flawless catalogue of songs, it would be hard for them to go wrong. Staying within the same genre, the best new hard rock/metal album of this year is Coheed & Cambria’s The Afterman: Ascension. Excellent musical talent, great vocals, and awesome writing make this concept album a must listen, even for people who normally aren’t fans of the band. The bets alternative album this year would have to be The Silversun Pickups’ Neck of the Woods. This album faced a lot of competition, but was the bets of the year. The album’s excellent use of sound makes it a great album. The vocals are awesome, and the writing is great as well. This is not an album to be missed. Meanwhile, the bets general rock album of this year is Green Day’s Uno. Many people were disappointed with the album, but I loved it. It was very much a Green Day album, even with the political messages stripped away. Overall, it was a great album. The best single this year is easily the new single from Hollywood Undead, Dead Bite. It seems to go back to the style of Swan Songs, at least a little. The lyrics are awesome, and the instrument usage creates a pretty spooky feel. It’s a great song, and is hopefully a sign of things to come for the band. Finally, the best album of the year would have to be Stone Sour’s House of Gold and Bones. I know I didn’t give it anything in other categories, but it deserves album of the year. It’s that awesome. It’s the heaviest album the band has released, and it’s a great album, one that I’ll be revisiting for quite some time.
